Wikipedia defines a sewing needle, used for hand sewing, is a long slender tool with a pointed tip at one end and a hole (or eye) at the other.  The earliest needles were made of bone or wood. Needles can be traced back to 28,000 BC with a slit for the eye used with raffia or gut.  Needles now are manufactured out of high carbon steel, nickel, 18K gold plated, titanium alloy and platinum.  Basic "rule-of-thumb", the higher the number, the smaller the needle.  So a size 2 needle will be larger that a size 7.
